Environmental management share
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate is a legal document issued by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) that permits a development project to proceed after evaluating its potential environmental and social impacts. Required under the Environmental Management Act, the certificate ensures that projects (such as mining, industrial developments, or infrastructure) are planned and executed in a way that minimizes environmental harm, promotes sustainability, and involves public participation.
It is mandatory for developments/projects prescribed in terms of the Environmental Management Act and helps protect ecosystems, public health, and community interests. The applicant begins by developing an EIA Prospectus which will be used as the basis for an EIA Report, developed in conjunction with a registered consultant and reviewed by EMA who, when satisfied will issue an EIA Certificate.
The total duration is inclusive of both the prospectus and report reviews.
An Effluent Discharge Licence is required for any entity that releases wastewater or liquid waste into the environment. Issued under Section 60 of the Environmental Management Act [Cap 20:27], it ensures that effluent is treated and monitored to prevent pollution of water bodies and protect public health. This Licence is applied for in a simple 4 step process which involves a site inspection and the payment of the applicable fee
This licence is necessary for the disposal of solid waste, including domestic, industrial, and agricultural waste. It regulates how waste is handled to prevent environmental degradation and is valid for one year, with quarterly reporting required. A Hazardous Substances Licence is required for the storage, sale, or use of substances that pose risks to human health or the environment. It is governed by Statutory Instrument 12 of 2007 and includes specific licences for transportation and transit of such substances. This Licence is applied for in a simple 4 step process which involves a site inspection and the payment of the applicable fee.
A Hazardous Waste Licence is required for the storage, sale, or use of waste substances that pose risks to human health or the environment. This Licence is applied for in a simple 4 step process which involves a site inspection and the payment of the applicable fee.
A Solid Waste Enterprise Licence is required for businesses involved in collecting, sorting, or processing solid waste for profit (e.g., scrap metal or wastepaper enterprises). It promotes responsible waste management and recycling practices. This Licence is applied for in a simple 4 step process which involves a site inspection and the payment of the applicable fee.
A Hazardous Substances Licence is required for the importation/ exportation of substances that pose risks to human health or the environment. It is governed by Statutory Instrument 12 of 2007 and includes specific licences for transportation and transit of such substances. This Licence is applied for in a simple 3 step process which involves the submission of a Hazardous Substances (Storage and Sale/Use) Licence and the payment of the applicable fee

It is governed by Statutory Instrument 12 of 2007 and includes specific licences for transportation and transit of such substances. This Licence is applied for in a simple 3 step process which involves the submission of vehicle registration books and the payment of the applicable fee
This licence is mandatory for entities that generate, store, transport, or dispose hazardous waste, such as used oil or fluorescent tubes. It ensures safe handling and disposal to minimize environmental and health risks, as outlined in Statutory Instrument 10 of 2007. This Licence is applied for in a simple 4 step process which involves a site inspection and the payment of the applicable fee.
